After i finish up subrosa, it's on to the next project. your opinions?

choice 1) CTF-PhilaeNight, DM-CanyonNight . . . look at these to see wtf.

choice 2) i considered doing something creative with amazing gardens. one thing was to quarter the area of the map, (it's a huge map with about triple the run time from corner to corner) double the height of all the walls, and put little hidey areas into the 2nd floor.

choice 3) there's the next in the alphabetical listing of assault maps. i dunno what it is, but i know i'd wind up cutting quite a bit out. glacier even has a couple of other areas that could be modified.

choice 4) do something original. i'd use the shit out of meshes, probably buildings of some kind or something canyoney.

choice 5) i could go back and mod maps that i consider complete. while playable, duststorm and aswan could use about an hour of work each. aswan needs some color cues as well as survivability. And yes i would FIX fix that roof on duststorm, while makining the hidey holes better.


Ultimately, i could rip some of the meshes/buildings from Blackhawk and make it a really NICE looking map. right now it's all brushes and about 10 hrs later you wouldn't recognize it.</daydream>

But 10 hrs on that one map is worth at least 3 other maps. I'd rather do 3 new maps and get closer to my goal of not having to play shit like chakass or ass of doom. or empty asses. or arena of ass. you get the pic.

anyway... what you guys think?

Yes i would prefer 3 good maps over 1 map made for invasion any day.

This map is huge and with proper planning we can pull quite a few invasion maps out of it.

Primeval is an Onslaught map, and yeah, a version with treehouses and catwalks would be cool -- Though I'm not so sure how that'd work as Invasion. Frostbite could also make a decent invasion map if the castles were built up a little bit more. Most other ONS maps are too big, though (IMO).
Actually I had in mind a treehouse invasion. Using the primeval map as the base would make it come to fruition much faster. All I'd need to do is make the catwalks and houses. I'll see if I can start on it this weekend.

I've played a couple of these on ivasion before.

echo is very good as-is for inv. similar to grendel in the simple pathing

otoh, fairyland is not a map to be tossed aside lightly. it is to be thrown with great force. it is horrible for invasion.

Well monsto will you eloberate on why fairy land is bad, and is it worth fixing (removing path and playerstarts)

first of all it's small. it's about a 2-4up map. 2ndly, the indoor areas are very narrow and short. there's an indoor atrium and the outdoor area with the jumpy mushrooms which are the only places for the taller monsters to fit. the rest of it is just too crowded just in general. titans and queens will spawn inside and cover entire hallways with head out the top. there's about 2 places to kinda hide, and it'd just be ppl standing around in those areas reflecting flak or spamming rox/mines cuz there's really no room to dance without getting hung on details like mushrooms, or trees, or the intricate terrain. and then i haven't even mentioned the deadly traps. The 2 hours that would be spent "fixing" this map would be better spent finding other maps like Echo that everyone would like and would require no editing.

I would even go so far as to not even test it. once ppl see it SOMEONE will go "oh cool!!" and then for whatever reason and the logic becomes "well some people like it" just like the current crop of stupid maps that everyone hates yet everyone likes.

example:
Chaka's Dome: some like it, some loathe it.
Edited Grendel: all like it (never heard complaints of it)

i guess the grander point (beyond Fairyland) is that there are many other maps that everyone really will like (like Echo) and there will be no controversy as to whether or not to leave it. those are the maps that should stay imo . . . the ones that don't piss people off when it gets voted.
