It's not hard to learn at all. For instance, if I wanted to coerce a merchant into telling me the whereabouts of the goods he stole, I would use the Intimidate skill. There would be conditional modifiers (such as the merchant's Charisma score) and Skill modifiers (such as MY Charisma score) then I roll a d20, add the modifiers and the DM will tell me whether or not I succeed. Rolling a 20 results in a critical, and rolling a 1 results in a critical fumble. It sounds complicated, but it is really simple.
