Yeah, I haven't even bothered running Vent in WINE, too much bad press about it eating resources etc. Is the Ventrilo protocol proprietory? If not we may be able to get a group together and make a native Linux client. I see there are a few projects on SF.net, but they are a few years old with no files released so probably no good. Anyway, up for it if anyone else is.
I run Ubuntu on all my machines, it installs nice and easily and I like to tinker with things. So I tend to end up reinstalling lots. Tried Gentoo, liked it. Hated the way it used all the drivers on the LiveCD then made me install the drivers I wanted manually afterwards. Portage is a really nice feature of Gentoo, but pretty much the same as apt-get for Debian/Ubuntu. Unfortunately if Linux is to progress onto the desktop then I think Ubuntu will be the distro to push it...its so easy and clean, works right out of the box with most of the basic software people will use installed straight away. The latest one asks if you want to use the proprietary drivers for your graphics card, then if you say yes gets them and sets it up for you with no hassle at all. Possibly easier to use than Windows.
Right, I'm off to sleep the day away.
