What I want to know is who gave these guys dynamite. You have to be certified. Have a understanding of the stuff. Nobody with any training is going to lay box's of dynamte to one side of the whale. Let alone use that much. I've blown a couple things up in my day and there was never a guessing game going on .

The same thing crossed my mind as well. It must have been the demolition team from the Oregon D.O.T.D. Being as mountainous Oregon is, they might have assigned the same demolition team that uses dynamite to carve roads and interstates from the hills and mountains. But the fact of the matter is this.... Who came up with the brilliant idea of blowing up the whale? lol... You have 50 tons of bones, flesh, and blubber that can easily absorb the shockwave from an outside blast. I might have worked if the blast originated from within the whale, but that's a different story.
