I need help with networking =P

Idk if I can talk about it hear but it does involve gaming.
I can't set up my linksys Ethernet router. It has 4 slots and i just need 3 for my computer, laptop and my dads computer. Can someone help me. I have comcast highspeed internet and 4 usb cables...

I don't beleive I can help and I absoloubtly hate routers/modems! every router is different but if you google this up you should find your answer.. my router is a piece of shite and I have problems with just 2 PC's and my Xbox but I used google to config it.. This is the worst one i've ever had! damn spanish crap thing. :angryfire:

Depending on the model of the linksys router you have if you only have 4 ethernet ports then 3 of them are next to each other and the 4th is about an inch away from those 3. The one that is an inch away from those 3 will be the one you have to connect to the comcast box using an ethernet cable. Then use an ethernet cable from the 1st port on the router to your computer. Once you do this you have to go into your configuration page of the linksys router using the ip address of the router (usually 192.168.0.1) and then enter the login name and passsword (if your using the default it's admin for the username and admin for the password). At some point you will need to change this so no one can access this but you. There should be a wizard that will walk you through the setup so the router pulls the IP address from the cable box to your linksys router. Your router will be setup for DHCP meaning it will assign internal IP addresses to all your local computers. If the wizard does not setup the connection correctly you may have to go into the settings of the router and configure this to talk with your cable modem. Usually this setting is Dynamic Ip Address for cable modems. I use PPPoE for DSL. Once this is setup and you are able to connect to the internet using your computer it's only a matter of running ethernet cables from the other 2 ports on the router to the other computers. It's that easy. If you are using a linksysy router that is also wireless DO NOT log into the configuration page using a wireless connection to make changes to the router. If you make the incorrect change and happen to lose the wireless connection you will not be able to get back into the configuration of the router. Always use a cabled connection when setting up a router. If you make a change that prevents you from accessing the router there should be a reset button on the back and if you use a paper clip you can push this in for about 5 seconds and it should reset the router to the default configuration and you can start over.

Since I do not know the model of your linksys router and the IP addresses for the router can be different for each company you may have to find this information in your user manual.

Doesnt make sense. If you have a router that is setup for DCHP (assigns internal IP addresses) that is connnected to a cable modem box that is assigned an external IP address from your ISP then you don't need to pay for another IP address. That's the reason DHCP was created. Sure they can tell you thats what you need but doing this for many years I can tell you they are 100% wrong. However, if you have not explained your situation correctly then it is possible you would need 2 external IP addresses but again there is not to many instances where you would if your just setting up 2 home computers and 1 laptop to surf the web and play games.
