I think my video card is fried. I have gotten this error a few times along with a garbled screen:
The driver nv4_disp for the display device \Device\Video0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. Please check with your hardware device vendor for any driver updates.
I can make my computer crash by playing any 3D game or by just staying on my desktop. The reason why I think this is a hardware problem rather than a software problem is because I have gotten garbled screens on the BIOS screen as well as at a DOS prompt. Since there are no Nvidia drivers loaded at the BIOS screen it must not be a problem with Windows or Nvidia drivers.
My video card is an 8800GTX not overclocked.
EDIT: Windows can't even detect my video card anymore.

I have no problems with my 8800GT OC.
Choco, I'm sure you have already tried to uninstall the drivers and reinstall them but there is a NVidia tool that will remove all driver files that may be left behind. I don't remember the name but I think you can search Guru3D to find it. If you have installed the latest Nvidia drivers remove them and go back to an older driver to see if that helps. Is this a PCI-e card if so try another PCI-e slot if you have one. Nvidia may have a BIOS update that may fix the problem with the card. Nvidia's software that came with your video card can update the firmware or you can do it manually. As always backup the BIOS prior to flashing it. You may want to call Nvidia's Tech support or the manufacturer of your card and they may be able to help you. Depending on how old the card is they may even replace it.
Everyone can say what they want about ATI but you won't ever find one of their cards in my machines.

I have been reading about this problem and it seems like most other people get this error while running games. Also, most other people get this problem right after buying a new computer. The difference here is that this problem just spontaneously started to happen 1.5 years after buying the card and the garbled textures happen even on the BIOS screen. I would update the BIOS but it is risky because if my screen becomes unreadable during the flash I can't do it. I am going to bring my computer into the computer shop where I bought it and they will test out my video card. I don't have any spare computer parts so I can't do it myself. If it turns out that it's broken I will check to see if its still under warranty and if it isn't I can just buy a new one in the 200-300$ range. If any of you have any suggestions on good video cards, please share.
I know Damaged said he will never have an ATI card in his machine but the 4870 is looking damn good and it is a beast of work horse. It also depends on your chipset in your northbridge? That can be the big determining factor in brand and card!

Acy Acy Acy why does it always have to be the AMD/ATI guy against the Intel/Nvidia guy. Why don't we settle this in the Mash or a little COD4. :boxing:

I've had the 4870 for a few months and it's worked great. No problems.

I know you said you can't but maybe you can borrow a spare card from some one just to test out? Maybe this card has a warrenty or just call the card manufacture alotta them make good on stuff with a nice upgrade too.
