Question: Does this occur when the pet is something already present in the level? E.g. does it happen when someone spawns pupae in Cubes, for example?

I think you have to pre-cache the monsters by opening player monster menu so the lag doesn't occur.

got some lag yesterday when I spawned off some flies. b/c I knew about this thread, I then asked other players if they felt it too, and they said yea. if I remember right, I have seen lag off spawning titan too. I don't believe this lag happens all the time, however.

There are two kinds of lag: the lag where your computer freezes briefly, and the one where everything still animates but nothing responds to your actions.

When your computer freezes, that is local to your computer. The game is still progressing, but your computer needs time to cache the new resources. In this case, it's very likely you're rendering the raptor and dragon for the first time. When rendering monsters for the first time, your computer will cache their resources (textures, animations, meshes, sounds, etc...). To cache the monsters ahead of time, open the player monster menu. This may not work if the map doesn't permit player monster dragons/raptors.
The alternative solutions is to upgrade your computer, force caching monsters at the beginning (this may cause crashes to lower-end machines and globally increase load time), or to reduce the quality of the monsters.

The other lag occurs through the network. This happens when the server is busy, and it cannot progress until the calculation(s) are finished. The game doesn't progress, but the clients machines are predicting where the game is going. This is not the likely case, since all the server is doing is spawning a monster.
The difference between successful people from others is
not in the lack of strength,
not in the lack of knowledge,
but rather in the lack of will.
