Anyone played this yet? The graphics are amazing, the best I've ever seen by quite a large margin - seriously. Its smooth as butter too. The weapons are fun and explosions very explodee. The sound quality is excellent, the music perfect. Its really atmospheric and the game is truly an achievement of graphical and audio quality. If this is what we can expect games to look and sound like in the future, we've got a lot to look forward too.

The AI SUCKS! It really really SUCKS! Those of you who lament UT2004 bots driving vehicles and then dumping them halfway to a node.... well epic have apparently done nothing to improve on the AI in their games. The locust men appear to swarm into your gunsights a lot. Fair enough for locusts I suppose. But more than once you'll be shooting one from cover, whittling down his health, and he will be standing there like a mannequin. If this is gaming AI of the future, I'm gonna take up gardening instead.

Seriously guys, Halo 1, Halo2, Republic Commando and Brute Force ALL had AI that was vastly superior to that in GoW. And they were all on the first Xbox.

The game is also over in a flash. This game is an extended graphical Tech Demo for the Xbox 360. Or am I missing something? Anyone else played this yet?

If you ask me all AI sucks, I mean even I can take on a Godlike bot and not be raped. Though I'd rather not take one on, but if you ask me all games should just go to online play and drop AI completely. Robotics is going nowhere fast.

I dont know about that. The AI on Halo was pretty damn impressive. The enemy would find cover and actually use some kind of tactics. Remember the Hunters on Halo 1? The way they would cover themselves with the shields and crouch until you were ready to strike. Remember the way the Grunts would act if you landed a grenade on their face? If you were using a vehicle humans would hop in and man the gun positions. This means the game is always playable. No matter how skilled you become at Halo, even on legendary difficulty it will still be a challenge due to the unpredicable and intricate AI. GoWs AI is utter crap. The monsters attack in the same basic pattern all the time so all it takes is remembering each little sequence of finger twitches to get to the next point. Once you've played it once its no longer fun, its homework. Monster around THIS corner bang, watch ground THERE for monsters popping up... wait.... Fire NOW. Even on max difficulty beating this game and finding all aspects of it wont take more than a few days.... not worth 50 quid IMO.

AI is here to stay. Dont forget that online gamers are still the tiniest minority. Think of all the people you know who play naught but PS2 games etc.

The AI on Gears of War is about equal to the AI on MGS on the PS1. Yes, the NPCs react. But they react very predictably. Not what I had been led to believe from all the hype. They should rename this Gears of Hype.

Thats no surprise from what i read, every aspect of the game is scripted so they can have full control over the quality of the game's performance.

I dont know I really hoped for more...

I havent played the game my self, but from playing quake doom3 etc... I know whats possible or what was possible when these games were released. Seems like they rushed the release if the AI is THAT lacking.

Once again it goes to show that its money that makes the difference in the gaming industry.

Dont get me wrong, this aint a bad game at all. Its just nothing new. Its Doom 1 made very pretty and given lots of big explosions.... not at all what I was expecting for supposedly the best game to date. If the play areas where a little more free-form, and the AI a LOT better, then this would be a true gaming marvel. As it is its just eye candy. I think Hornet hit the nail on the head there. It had to be scripted for it to achieve this level of graphical and audio detail without suffering from performance issues such as slowdown, lag or wotnot (think Oblivions 'pop-out' scenery if you ride a fast horse). Personally I value gameplay a lot more than pretty graphics. But it looks AMAZING. Its deffo worth a rental or picking up for about 30 quid. But 50? Pffft.

If that is the case, it will be interesting to see how UT2007 compares graphically to GoW.

What are the graphics capability of the Xbox360 compared to a medium range PC?

Graphically the xbox360 uses a unified shader video card from ATI. Currently none are available for the PC. The next gen ATI cards will be based on the xbox360 graphic system. These cards will be the R600 based cores from ATI. The major difference with the unified shader model is that you have a choice of how many pixel or shader units you have out of a pool. So if your given 64 you can split it so theres 16 vertex, and the rest pixel (or any combination). In the current model its set in stone when the microprocessor is produced. You will need DX10 (Vista) will support it, or a rumored DX 9.0L.

What about the processors? What kind of kit is a Xbox360 using? Its my understanding that takes a lot of the processor up. Could that be part of the reason the AI on GoW is so borked?
