From that article, it looks like the Audigy more than holds its own.
Bottom line: from a sound perspective, why would I get a discrete audio card vs onboard? Video cards make a noticible difference. What should i be looking for (or hearing for) in a new audio card?

I just basically want to run the hardware audio feature in UT. My old onboard, my current onboard, and the sound card aren't capable of it. What I've heard it sounds like there is more audio played and more correctly with using it in hardware mode.
You should notice a considerably difference, however, it would depend on your onboard. I have two x-fi cards, one in a desktop and a notebook version. The notebook is les of a difference however the desktop version is a massive difference especially if you have a 7.1 sound system. Well worth getting - i assume UT3 will be making even more use of the advanced sound technology than 2004 did.
Ater using onboard sound,a soundblaster live gamer and a soundblaster xfi gamer I can tell you there is a big diffrence if the game suports it.
There is a notable diffrence in music to me but many people are happy with onboard .I havnt had good luck with the Xfi gamer though it has a problem with leting windows shut down on my system so I returned it.I will probly try another one when I do a clean install of XP
