Yeah, making models really isn't [too] hard for me. Although certain types of things are easier than others naturally.
UVMapping / Texturing is what I tend to find hard. The thing I specifically want to figure out is how to do the texture color / texture blending that most natural environments use to create nice transitions between say, stone walls and dirt-covered floors.

Oh Sweet, Wail's in here! Glad to have you aboard
Here's what I'm thinking for my room.
I'm going to get rid of one of my maps off the list (nominated too many times), but I'm thinking of doing Self Construct for my room. An easy room, an easy concept, and the only thing I need to work on is to decide on my layout and theme for this room.
I'll come up with more details later :)

That just happens to be my specialty, I was just helping Ant with the UV concept the other day. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. You know where to find me. For the blending of terrain textures, I would use a combinations of things in an external graphics program. Open them up as separate layers and use the alpha channel to fade from one to the other and maybe activate Z transparency... Maybe. It really depends on the textures and how far you wish to go with it.

Greetings Ant and friends. That was me as ANTI-Hero btw, and I have just recently started map-making in UnrealEd. I have a bunch of questions, please excuse if some are rather basic. For starters, I have made a room with Arborea textures and I would like to know how I could add plants and insect/animal sounds to my room. Basically I am trying to make a "green" or "eco-friendly" type room. Maybe there is a tutorial out there for adding sounds and objects?
Also 1024 by 1024, is rather small... can I have one size up?
And when the room is eventually completed how do I submit it?
Thanks a lot!

Ahh, your secrecy is broken!
Whenever I gather some time, I'll send you a pm (I'm predicting the weekends).

Sure, you can build a 1025X1025 room!
Current Roster:
- 40 Shards
- Ant
- Savage
- Wail
- Zepar
With this many rooms, I'm thinking about merging my room with someone so it'll be easier for Shards to combine all the rooms into one.
May I suggest sizes at most:
10240X10240
-or-
5120X5120
Shards, which do you prefer?[/color]

Hey ZepaR,
There are many "plant" static meshes in various packages within UT2004. check out this link for a partial listing:
http://wiki.beyondunreal.com/Legacy:Sta ... .26_plants
I'm sure there are others, but you would have to search the packages yourself.
In terms of sounds, it sounds like you would want ambient sounds (they loop sounds or play them from a location at a given time interval - i.e. the wind blows constantly or a frog croaks every 26 seconds etc.)
To add ambient sounds look in the "actor" browser and expand the "keypoint" catagory and select the AmbientSound actor.
Then place it where you want it in your map.
Now find a sound you want it to play - open the sound browser and find your sound (the outdoor ambiance package has some animal sounds).
With your chosen sound selected (highlighted in the sound browser), open the properties of the ambient sound actor in your map.
Expand the "sound" category.
If you want the sound to loop constantly then click in the field next to "AmbientSound" and then click the "use" button that appears.
If you want it to play on a timed interval you need to click next to the "soundemitters" field and click "add".
Then under this sound emitter click the "emitsound" field and click "use".
Set the "emitinterval" (in seconds - e.g. the 26 secs for the frog croak).
You can change the radius and the volume if needed.
You can also import custom sounds if you want. (must be WAV files , mono, 8 or 16 bit, 11kHz to 44kHz if I remember correctly).
----------------------------------------------------
Oh, will I be joining the group...maybe, if I get inspired. Let me know what your theme is going to be.

Nice to see so many people on board already!
I'd say 5120x5120 is big enough, going over by a bit would be OK though. If we finish up with 6 connected rooms we'd end up with something like a 13000x13000 map overall.
If anyone else wants to get on board then this would be the time to post it, since we probably need to get this going quite quickly so it doesn't drag out like last year. Does anyone have any particular theme ideas? Maybe tomorrow I could make a list of possible themes (with some of mine included) so we can simply decide on which one we're doing / using as a guide. I'm pretty much ready to start making my room anyhow.

I think I'll merge my room with someone's. Every passing day I find myself with a heavier collection of projects to get done while school is demanding more of my time. I cannot develop an entire room in time unless I go on a mapping spree. I just want to apply the "self-construct" theme on someone's room. I just need to chat with a few folks over vent to find a decision.
As for a theme, I'll suggest Open space walkways that'll lead to people's space stations (or rooms). This way people can see where the rooms are positioned, and they know where to go.
If not, why not a open cavern with lava. The walkways will lead you to other branched off tunnels (which is our rooms), or better yet, lead to a base that contains a high-tech room in case someone built a sci-fi room or something.

So we don't lose focus on the project I think I'll set a deadline of the final day of October for room submission, although we can end it earlier if everyone completed theirs before then (I'm not sure how busy everyone will be with Halloween stuff). Would everyone rather I put a page up on FileFront again or simply have all the rooms emailed to me?

Can anyone who has finished upload their map, so I can get an idea of how to do this..
