SVA Club Idea - Need feedback

And maybe now you will understand why I came up with the idea for this club.

Zipher, I'm glad you decided to come out of lurking and join us, but if you think I came up with this idea because I wanted a donors club, then you don't know me very well.

I ran SV and other servers for over a year with zero financial support, pouring thousands of my own money into building servers, and renting bandwith and space. Unlike some other big servers out there, I get absolutely nothing donated to me (bandwith, hosting, etc). I paid for everything, server and website. I didn't ask anyone for a dime. And when the financial burden finally started becoming too much, I still didn't want to accept donations, so I decided to try and sell T-Shirts. When, the T-Shirts didn't really move, I was then forced to accept donations. And I must say I am truly appreciative and touched by the generocity of everyone. And at this point, the donations truly keep this server afloat.

When I thought about getting the SVAs more involved with us, I was just going to throw it out there. But a few thoughts came to mind.

If the SVAs truly wanted to compete, they would need to:

1. Communicate with each other easily (Email Address)
2. Communicate in-game easier (Teamspeak)
3. Have some sort of practices (Private server)

This is why I came up with these this club. Now, If I decided to just set these up, and offer them to whoever declared themselves an SVA, I would soon have 50 people signing up. I know some of the SVA very well, but I don't know them all for sure. I don't have a roster, and I have no proof that someone is who they say. I would probably have a new asshat on the teamspeak server every night, spouting obscenities, racial slurs, or spamming music. I would have people giving out the password to the private server, or using the teamspeak channel for things other than the game. So how could I control it?

The only way I can have some sort of control, without having someone monitor things 24/7 is to have a small fee for these things. This is not to make the SVAs an exclusive club. It's not to start a donors club. If you think about it, you get a lot for the $5 and no one is going to pay even $5 a month for the priviledge of being a total asshole and getting kicked out of there after one day. I would know that anyone who joined this club would only be serious people, true SVAs, and would like to take advantage of these things. I would love to provide these for all to use, but I fear abuse. And don't tell me there wouldn't be any.

And the sign up fee is to prevent people from declaring themselves SVA for a month to take advantage of a scrim or tournament, and then bailing and going back to whoever they were. And notice that I said the set up fee would get you a T-Shirt, but if you already bought a T-Shirt, or made a donation of $25, that would apply.

Anyway, I would love to have a scrim agains the SVAs. Perhaps we should pick 2 coordinators for the SVAs. They probably know the other SVAs better than I do. I would nominate killrob and kaeolian if they would be interested.

The idea of an SVA club is dead. It was a good idea, I thought but oh well.

well anyone who would feel exculded because they already pay for other stuff obviously has other priorties, some of us dont. I work nights during the week therefore 95% of my play time is friday and saturday nights but usually for hours on end. I thought it was a great idea for those of us that make UT a prioty. I dont think there is a wrong way to wear the SVA tag, as Ive seen titan clan members wearing the SVA tag and they have there own server.
I had checked into the renting of servers and bandwidth myself and its well beyond my means so the idea behind the club would have been great for people like me who have limited time but willing to invest an extreamly small amount of money to have access to these types of services, as UT is my entertainment.
Dont know if I've made any kinda of point here but had to throw in my 2 and 1/2 cents here.
As for being a coordinator I feel that my lack of time to devote during the week would not be fair to those who could devote more time to this ( very much appreciate the thought though Toxic).
But would still take a day off if the scrim could not take place on the weekend.
And to have a private server to practice on and get tips from better players would have been lovely to us mediocre players who love getting better.
Course if i win the lottery it might be a different story. LOL

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of the SVA club, and I understand the need to have some form of control so random people don't ruin it for the rest of us. But if its a monthly fee it would exclude some people (not just me) who have had the SVA tag on for quite a long time while allowing anyone to get in with a small fee. Furthermore as soon as you throw a mandatory price tag on something your going to get people who feel that they now have a right to complain if theres not a match one week or if the server is down or try to use their payment as leverage to get away with things that shouldn't be acceptable. Look at the number of people who buy $50 mmo's and $15 monthly subscriptions only to do things they know will get them banned. If the servers need extra money to support a full SVA server etc, then thats entirely different (and I wouldn't even be opposed to a fee), but a monthly subscription simply won't end all problems with idiots. They have money too.

Hey Toxic dont let this ruin it just because some people dont like the idea.

As discussed before there would be nothing stopping people wearing the SVA tag. Its an open club for anyone who loves this server, and i still see new people wearing the tag every day.

But for people who do want to take it a little more seriously but still want to be an SVA there is this club, to differenciate between an SVA and people who want to be in the SVA "club" could add another symbol to their name such as SVAE with the E being for elite.

Please dont let some peoples complaining ruin it for the people that want to make this happen im sure the support far outwieghs the negative ppl complaining and ruininig it for the rest of us.

As far as helping organise this SVA vs DW scrim. Count me in :cheers:

I just noticed this thread. It's a great idea. BUT... I don't have a job, I have no money whatsoever to speak of and no way to pay 5 dollars a month. Man I hate being 14. But I love your server the other day when it went down I didn't know what to do. It was scary. Though I'd like to be considered part of the 'club', I can't afford it. Sorry.

This was another thing I was thinkin toxic would it be worth making it free to certain SVA> that you know are decent players, and a lasting part of our community, that are at an age where paying for it isnt an option? There would only be a very small number of people who would qualify for this obviously worked out by your self.

I know some people who are paying may complain about this but these kids simply dont have the means to pay let alone the money. I cant speak for everyone, and I know it does cost to provide this service, but Id be willing to "sponsor" a young SVA> who wanted to join the club but cant afford it. They would have to fit in to the above catagory first, but apart from that I dont mind paying another $5 a month on top of my own.

Just to clear something up, if it did take place it would not prevent people who love the server from using the SVA tag. The people in this SVA club would have added some extra charater to signify their new status (sva+>).

Anyway, I think this is a great idea. I'd certainly be willing to pay $5 a month for a more exclusive server so I can play with more serious gamers. I really enjoy playing on Death Warrent Spam Vikings, and I get tired of having to deal with idiots and noobs on the public server. I want to play, well-organised, well-coordinated games where all the players work as a team, and not a bunch of DM guys to who stumbled into a ONS server.

Is this thing still on?
