Hey all, i'm totally and utterly confused about building a new system. I want something where i don't have to go all in right now which has pretty much lead me towards the asus striker extreme and 8800gt (buy one now, one later). The system is pretty much for UT3 i guess but i'd rather not have just enough..as i already have that with my laptop (dual core 2ghz, go 7950gtx, 2gb ram).
I'd buy my parts through scan.co.uk and was looking at spending around £1000 now (if that could include both 8800gt's that'd be awesome).
Any help would be so so appreciated!

i think i'm even more utterly confused about this kinda stuff...but if you're just getting it to play ut3 and plan on getting 2 8800gt's then i'd just get one now and wait for the price to drop before getting the 2nd one like someone else on this site said on another thread. i'm hoping 1 will work fine for UT3 cause that's all I plan on getting.

Soo basically i'm looking at getting the rest of the machine (cables, psu, cooling etc) for as little as possible..but despite reading volumes on building new rigs etc the cables and cooling (unless its water cooling) gets skipped :/
The unsure part...
Samsung SH-S203N/BEBN 20x DVD±R, 16x DVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RW x6, SATA,Lightscribe, Black, OEM inc Nero
£17
Xclio SuperTower Black Hi-Performance Gaming + 650W EZCool Silent SLi pPFC Power Supply PCI-E + SATA AMD & P4 Ready 12cm Silent Fan ATX12v Ready

74 Gb Western Digital WD740ADFD Raptor, SATA150, 10000 rpm, 16MB Cache, 5.2 ms

Bringing the total to £708. If the cooling and cables can be bought cheap i'd have enough left over for the second 8800gt.

Interestingly the 780i is slated for release 'soon' (supposedly 12th nov, but also supposedly delayed). With support for tri-sli o.O 3 x 8800gt!? Think i may hold off till christmas... so confusing!

Rob was trying to work from your Uksight and it would not let me late last night to show you a possible build. I was thinking you might want to go with an x38 board instead of the 680i. your choice but from what I have been seeing and hearing it is the better board. Looks like you can build a very trespectable system for 1000 quid.

Yeah i was tempted be the x38 too... i guess i shouldn't spend too much money on it. One 8800gt should meet my needs easily. I've been finding that it's very easy to save money on the case/psu/memory. The memory choice i think is pretty safe, being corsair and not a value model. The case and psu i'm less certain about. Don't want to go ruining the rest of the system with a couple of poor componants!

On the face of things, it doesn't sound all too appealing - no option for sli leaves me stuck with a single 8800gt for a long time and as i hadn't really intended on serious overclocking I don't really see the advantage with the X38. Apparently the 680i mobo's initally had problems however they have since been solved with a series of bios updates and are curently fine.
Also, with the x38 is DDR2 memory compatible? I really don't want to spend so much on the DDR3 memory... 4GB for £700 (the most expensive).
Edit: More research has lead me towards the 680i - the x38 sounds great if you have the money to get the latest and greatest in memory. I don't!

Are we looking at the same boards? Okay the 680 is neccessary for SLI. That is your best bet good luck. PSU and case are two things that you need now. I would look at a PSU not in the case and if you are thinking about SLI later you need at least a 600 watt unit with SLI certification.

As far as cables are concerned unless your board is an open box you should have cables in it to hook up any and all things to your mother board. CPU fan I personally like the Zalman 9700 great after market cooling kinda pricey but well worth keeping that Q6600 beast cool!
