Hey All,

I know many of you use or are at least familiar with Linux distributions, and wanted to ask what your opinion is on the most user friendly distribution.

I have an old Dell Dimension that I got from my mother in law for free and it's just sitting there, so I was thinking of toying around. It has a 1.6 ghz P4, 1gb ram, 40 gb hard drive, and 16mb ati rage 128 ultra. I would want a distribution that is as novice and easy to figure out as possible to get started.

Also, if there is no such thing, and I am being a noob to think anything about an install of Linux would be easy, please let me know, as I don't have a ton of time to work on said fun project.

What say you?
Cheers, Damnidge

I personally don't care for Red Hat Distros. I would recommend a Debian based distro due to the ease of use of the Deb packages. Ubuntu is the best in my opinion but Gentoo is good too. Plus you can always check it out before you install it by booting from the CD.

wow, thanks guys for the quick help. I'll search through that page, but knowing what to focus on helps in the search.

I'm on summer break right now and have two weeks with nothing planned, (and have an infant so I'm a bit grounded) so this will help me kill some time.

No problem. Their are a lot of "flavors" of Linux out there and it can be a bit overwhelming. Stick with Ubuntu and you can always experiment with other distros from live CD's. Good luck!
