Hey everyone, I just want to give a shout out there to see if anyone has any family working at Intel with access to the "company store" lol.
Seriously, I've heard some great things so far about the latest from Intel. From early indications, these chips beat up Opteron and take its lunch money.
I've become a huge fan of AMD since I've seen what it can do for this game, but if these latest from Intel can do what the early press says it can, then wow.
But seriously, if anyone knows how to get a couple of these puppies for a discount, I'd love to give them a true benchmark test. Let 'em run the Vikings for a few nights. That would be a true test.

I'll have to check this out at my job. I work for D&H distributing and we sell INTEL and AMD,
if you can get me a model number and your cost I can see if I can get them cheaper through my employ discount cause we only sell to resellers except for emploee purchuses.
The money end we can do in PM if you want or E-mail, mines listed on the site.
I can even probaly fork some of the cost to help out and ship them to you free.
I give a looks see tonight when I go in to see if we have or will soon have them.
We get stuff with street sell dates sometimes but I still cant buy them till they officially go on sell. I;ll let you know tommorrow morning if I find anything out.

Wow, thanks killrob, you rock.
I think they are still a few weeks away from official relese.
This is the latest I have. From theinquirer.net
I have to really think about this, as it would be quite an outlay for me. I have no intel parts whatsoever. At least with the AMD stuff, I just ebay the old processors and pop in new ones. A few hundred dollars buys me an upgrade. I would need to get a whole new mobo, and memory.

I think I want to see a few more reviews first, but if the reviews hold up like they have so far, I'd definitely be interested. Let me know how much you could get them for.As we reported earlier, Intel Woodcrest will launch on the 26th of June and ship on that date. The TDP is now 65W on 2.66GHz SKUs and below, while the 3GHz chips have 80W TDPs.
Intel will sell the 5160 Woodcrest, a 3GHz, 1333MHz part for $850; the 5150 2.66GHz 1333MHz part for $690; the 5148T for $520 - this is a 2.33GHz part; the 5130 2GHz at $315; the 5120 1.86GHz 1066MHz bus part at $250, and the 5110 1.60GHz 1066MHz CPU at $210. Ultra dense server Woodcrests will eat 40W.

thats cool , We dont have them yet but I will probaly be able to know something before there release cause like I said a lot of intel and microsoft come through our facility a few weeks prior to release. We were sitting on the xbox360 for 3 weeks before the release, not allowed to touch of course till the release date. They had 8 cameras trained on the 3 pallets at all times. I will defenitly be looking for that 5160. We sell anything and everything computer wise including server chassis up to and including some 7 foot tall ones we have right now, and we have any part you can stick in them. I can get memory cards real cheap, we have like 4 brands we carry. I tripped out when i saw the 800 speed ddr-2 modules.
So let me know when you need something and I'll give you my price and if you cant find it cheaper I can get it for ya.

ROFL!
the lady who cummunicates with our corperate office for us will be in tonight so I'll have her leave instructions that I need to know as soon as these become available. Hopefully I'll know the cost even before there available.
Question would an Opteron make for a good home computer, cause I can get them cheaper than the high end fx60 dual cores?
In my hunt I ran across some Dual core XEON's 3ghz 2x2mb L2 cache, I was thinking of making a system with 2 of these and some 800 speed ram with a couple of WD raptors.

Opterons are optimized for multiprocessing, so they're mostly good if you're running a lot of kernel threads at the same time (such as handling a bazillion incoming sockets). They're great for server work that way...I'm not so sure how they'd handle on a single-user system. You probably wouldn't bog down as much if you multitask so far, but if you take a high-end Athlon 64 FX system and tweak it, you're probably going to end up with an obscene amount of raw power compared to the Opteron anyway.
That, and of course Dual-Core systems in general are built to multitask. The next idiot who tells me he wants a dual-core system in his office gets "it has a requirement of the typist having 4 arms".

Well being as I can get the model 254 opteron for a little under $400 It was just seeming like it might be worth it since it could handle more threads and hopefully be able to move them along a little faster it would allow UT to not put such a burden on it like it does this piss ant pentium 4. Cause as i unfortunatly have windows it hitting about 460 or so threads?
Although I really had no idea weather it would be able to speed up a single task? :confused4:

A "server" opteron is exactly the same as an FX processor with only 3 exceptions:
1. FX can use cheaper, faster non-ECC ram
2. FX has an unlocked multiplier
3. A "server" opteron can be used in a multiple CPU system
Opterons come in 3 flavors:
1xx series - Single CPU systems
2xx series - Dual CPU systems
8xx series - Quad or more systems
There are newer single CPU opterons (165, 170, etc.) which have dual cores and use non-ecc ram, but they have locked multipliers and cannot be used in multiple CPU systems.
If you are looking to build a multi-cpu system, then you have no choice but go for a 2* Opteron. If not, then you will probably be better off picking up a 1* opteron and overclocking the shit out of it. Most of the 1* opterons can reach close to FX-60 speed at half the cost.
